Why Do I Track New Jersey Beach Stats?

Excellent question. I'm a huge fan of the beach. . A friend of mine said since your a geek too, why not track beach conditions each day. So that is what I began to do. . . What you see on this page is all the data that I gathered from the entire 2006 + 2007 New Jersey beach season. The beach conditions are from the Belmar area, so don't expect them to be exactly the same throughout the state. Take a look at this page and you will see all the various stats, graphs, and calendar. If anything, I'm fairly certain this is overkill.

The Method To My Madness

Each day at exactly 1pm EST (during the summer months only), the calendar will be updated. Each colored box has full weather details of the day when you mouse over it. The beach day colors are a result of my personal preference of a nice beach day, but for the most part the majority of beach goers would agree with me. UV index is not taken into account because its high every day. Water temperature and wave height are tracked but do not effect the outcome of the beach day. Humidty is also not taken into account, its summer in NJ. . . gimme a break :) For the day to be green, the forecast must be partly cloud (or something similar) or sunny. That forecast is implied in each beach category listed. My other stipulations are as follows:

Perfect Day: Little to no wind, with temperatures between 80 and 93 degrees.

Very Good: Same as before, except the winds may be a bit stronger and/or it is hotter than 93 degrees.

Average: These are days that are above 70 degrees and have annoying wind conditions. Think flying umbrellas, and the occasional sand in the face gust.

Below Average: Same as before, except stronger winds, more than just annoying. Think, sand in the mouth, enjoy lunch :)

Poor: The forecast is overcast or mostly cloudy. Despite the temperature, if there's no sun, I don't consider it a good beach day. =P

Nobeach: Rain of some sort is listed in the current forecast.
NA: This means for some reason when trying to obtain the forecast information, it was unailable, so it is hard to judge the day when there's nothing to go by :)

Mutliple Categories: Means for some reason I added two forecast entries that day. I don't intend to use this, but just in case. . .

NJ Beach Graph of 2006

This line graph represents the beach stats over the entire season. The orange line is the Air Temperature, blue line represents the Water Temperature, and yellow is the Wind. If you hover over the points you can see the exact date and quality of the beach day(average, no beach, etc). Sorry the graph is so small, but you can take a closer look by right clicking on the graph and selecting "zoom in". Expect to see a comparative graph for the 2007 summer season.

A breakdown of the points on the graph.
