This should be my last HD follow up post for awhile. I have since attempted to overclock my 3800+ so x264 movies play a bit better. I am very pleased with the results. Stock speed is 2.0 gz and it is now running at 3gz. This is essentially the equivalent of the AMD Athlon 6000+.
Price of Athlon 64 X2 3800+: $80 (socket 939)
Price of Thermaltake V1 cooler: $60
Total: $140
Price of Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz: $216 (socket AM2)
Total: $216
Money saved: $76 ( w/o heatsink purchase $136).
Please note that the average person will be just fine getting it to run at ~2.7gz on stock cooling. So that will save you even more money and would be plenty fast for 1080p content. If you want to stream HD content for cheap and have a socket 939 board, then get a 3800+ and overlock it. Thank me later.
