Nintendo Wii Sucks

I've followed the Nintendo Wii craze since the start. How everyone thought it was the greatest thing since the Mario Mushroom power up. How its way more fun than the PS3 and 360. Well, the Nintendo Wii sucks.

So why does it suck? Games will not support and will never run in HD resolution. In this day an age to NOT include HD support is completely unacceptable. For a console to be even considered "Next Gen", it NEEDS to have this! Games are in their own proprietary format. which means no DVDs or Blu-ray. The guts inside this console are pathetic. The hardware was outdated before the console even came out. The games do not vary in genre, and they are all geared towards toddlers to teens.

But wait, people say the controller is revolutionary ! To a point, yes it is. Remember the glove for Nintendo a long time ago? The truth is that Sony and Microsoft can and probably will make a controller similar to Wii controllers. That is the ONLY thing Nintendo has going for it. If you want to put down 150 or 200 dollars on this system cause of a controller, go right ahead.

But wait, some people might say Nintendo lets you download the classics! Give me a break. There has been emulators around so you can play your classic games on many consoles and the PC for years now. Not to mention there are those plug and play retro games that work with any tv.

People who buy the Nintendo Wii are casual gamers, and I have no problem with that. But the console is far from revolutionary. Its not the best thing ever made. And please, for the love of god, develop a game thats NOT based on Mario.

Due to the amount of comments posted I feel as though its time for an update. Firstly, I want to thank everyone for chiming in, especially those who did nothing but rip my arguements apart. I re-read my post to see if I still agreed with my initial assesment of the Nintendo Wii. Guess what? I still do.

There have been a few updates to consoles these days. At this point in time the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 have the option to purchase HD movies. The xbox 360 can even stream movies and tv shows from Netflix. How's that for next gen? When I last talked about these consoles the prices were all very high but now times have changed. A Nintendo Wii is nearly the same price as a Playstation 3. Insanity! (Keep in mind folks that the PS3 comes with a blu-ray player that is at least $250+ ALONE) Why is the xbox 360 so cheap? (I hear you whispering to yourself that its because it sucks) Actually, its because the console is over 3 years old which means its now a lot cheaper to make. The Playstation 3 is still a lot of money because its still very expensive to make. The Nintendo Wii is two 2 years old which means its a lot cheaper to make, but still very expensive to buy due to smart marketing and supply & demand. Clearly Nintendo is making a lot of money these days.

As I predicted a motion controller has finally arrived for xbox to compete with the Nintendo Wii. It was announced and demo'd at E3, as reported by engadget. If this device is relatively cheap and as good as they say this could be devastating to Nintendo.

When it came out, I would've said how you were wrong, they'd be just as innovative as they were with the SNES and 64, and it'd be the future of gaming.

Shame I'm wrong though.

Wii blows, what a let down. Still wnjoy playing Mario Galaxy/WariowareTouched/Smash Bros/Mario Kart(the wii version really does rule).

But damn, only one of those I play online, and it's not like there's any patching, or downloadable content.

I can forgive HD, but no downloadable content? It'd increase the longevity of games like Smash Bros and MKart. I've given up on Nintendo, they've chose another market, fair enough. Valve seem like a more fan influenced community, I value that more than what Nintendo have done.

Also the rehashing is beyond ridiculous. Metroid Trilogy? They could've done that anyway when they released Metroid 3, not sell one, then sell a bundle. Cheap as all hell. Lost me as a fan.

That being said I rank the DS very highly. Brilliant handheld.

Well, I´m happy with my Wii, you can even call me a Nintendo Gayboy. I enjoy the "Hardcore" games like mario cart as well as the "Casual". Funny enough: when playing causal games makes me remember my days at the Arcades back in the 80´s/early 90´s.

I think the Wii is much better than the 360 and ps3. Thw Wii is small and compact and gives you alot more exercise than most of you pot heads could handle being cained. I've invested a lot of time and money on a system that is perfect and more than a glorified Game Cube with perfect software library and a great, gimmicky controller. If my wife and kids didn't love the damned thing so much, I would have 2 of them about a year ago when I realized how great the software library is.

I'm glad i did not buy a PS3 and I'm absolutely chuffed that I didn't.

The Wii totally sucks my dick...the games are fantastic, the system itself is powerfull and Nintendo is making about 50 games per year(minigame collections don't count). All 50 of its "Mega Games" RE4 and Zelda: TP are GAMECUBE PORTS!! To top it all off Nintendo is trying to sell you all the extremely great games through the Virtual Console before the ones you really want to buy, I know Nintendo really loves making less money than any other console maker but c'mon, Nintendo lets take the top spot! The Wii is great and is nothing but a non-profit machine for Nintendo and more....lots of worthwhile games so far and loads of great ones on the horizon...what a piece of quality..

another thing that annoys me about nintendo is that they keep reusing their games with the same plots. most mario games go like this: bowser gets some item and fucks everything up, then kidnaps peach. also systems like the 360 and ps3 keep making new game series, while the wii is sticking to the old ones. (borderlands for the 360 and ps3 looks good, btw) but yeah i had a wii then converted to the 360 and have not regretted my decision since. and there's one thing tha matters the most in gaming today: ONLINE PLAY

Unless you buy the original, which Nintendo is offering to do.
And, they DO have the ability to buy and watch movies from the Wii (Japan-only, for now).
And if the Wii sucks so hard, then why is it outselling the PS3 and the 360 4 to 1?
I bought a Wii about two years ago. I have not regretted my decision since then.
I've played my cousin's PS3, and it actually almost gave me a seizure. No joke. I felt like I was going to fall over and pass out.
The 360 is also aging rather quickly, since it's been out longer. I don't see much past Natal.
Also, I have to say that, even though there is quite a bit of shovelware for the Wii, there are many gems in the Wii's software library, many more than what the PS3 and 360 have to offer.
In conclusion: I respect your opinion, but some of your sources are wrong, and I do prefer the Wii over the PS3 and 360 combined.
Oh, and HD sucks too. Costs too much to set up with no visible difference whatsoever. 480i/p FTW!!!

Well, I´m happy with my Wii, you can even call me a Nintendo Fanboy. I enjoy the "Hardcore" games as well as the "Casual". Funny enough: when playing causal games makes me remember my days at the Arcades back in the 80´s/early 90´s.

I know that nothing I´ll ever say can change your mind or anyone´s from here, but that´s not my point. My point is this: Why to hate Wii? Hating does not have anything to do with faults. Hating is about caring. You can´t hate what you don´t care at all. When you care about something you dislike, you end up hating it. When you hate something, you end up giving it importance.

A few friends of mine dislike the Wii and they know nothing about the console. Cause they don´t care. They game happily with their respective choises without problem. No research about prices, no search for past/presente/future releases of the competence, no discussions about faults of the rivals... just minding their gaming treasures.

Do not give importance to the Wii. The more you try the more people will know about the Wii. There is no such thing as "bad publicity".

I love the fact that there exists a strong competence between such powerful companies: it brings wonderful things to us gamers. If Nintendo sells more, Sony and Microsoft will do great things for us. The same goes the other way. The 3 of them are looking strong and we will surely see them in the next generation once this cycle is over.

Do not give immportance to the Wii by talking or thinking too much about it. That´s useless, time consuming and by the reading of your article, just makes you feel angry.

The Wii has been in beta since 1998, they haven't improved it much, and Nintendo consoles have always been slow. The biggest and best creation I think was ever made by Nintendo would have to be the Nintendo DS as you can mod it to do just about anything you want, hack into 90% of the web(excluding PayPal and other highly monitored sites), you can put Linux onto it even. The Wii does stink in comparison, but it is cheap and it keeps the kids(10 and under, lol) entertained.

I bought the Wii for my wife. She likes it, but she would rather play Xbox 360. Even on casual games (xbox live arcade), she would rather play a boring casual game with good graphics than the same type game on the Wii with cool controller.

I'm 42 years old. I have been playing video games since most of you were born (probably before). I think Microsoft really got the controller right with the 360. It just feels good -- hours and hours into play. The Red Ring of Death sucks, though. Had it not been for this overheating issue, I think the Xbox 360 is near perfect. If they would add web-surfing, it would be great.

There is nothing wrong with the PS3. It was just late in arriving and it cost a bundle. Other than that, I have no hate for the box..

The Wii, on the other hand, has been a complete disappointment to me. I hate the graphics. I use a large plasma to display the graphics and it is lackluster, at best. I like Galaxy, Metroid, Kart, and even Paper a lot, but after that lists there is only a couple of games left (brawl, etc.). The rest of the games are just average, at best.

The Wii-mote is cool, but there are times I just want to sit in my recliner and not be bothered with all the flailing about to control characters. It is a novelty item that loses it appeal when playing alone. It is a blast when you invite someone younger or older to play along. However, 95% of my playing time is done alone or co-op with someone.

In the end, I admit that I like shooters and RPGs (fallout 3, oblivion, mass effect). I don't think either of these type of games look good on Wii -- yeah, I know, Link and his adventures look fine -- now, give me another example!?

Anyway, I don't think the Wii should be considered in the same class as PS3 and Xbox 360. It is a category of its own. Once you remove it and consider it for what it is -- a great casual gaming machine, it is easier understand why it is popular.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 are in a different class and both are exceptional.

I held out on the 360 because I had some real hopes for this.
Motion sensitive controls sounded good in theory, but you don't really realize them while you're playing.
When I'm playing some of their good games, I feel lonely.(Metroid Prime, Smash Bros., Mario Kart)
You can say Smash Bros. is amazing... but I can never find a match online and I have excellent internet connection.
I'm not going to hate on it, but I just can't love it like I loved the N64 and the SNES.
It can't even get Earthbound(greatest game ever) because of copywrite stuff.

I refuse to believe that Nintendo abandoned their core fanbase with the Wii. The games they develop and publish are, for the most part, fun (Smash Bros., Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Super Paper Mario, WarioWare and more are good fun while Wii Fit and some dubious others are not). The system and those games work. Unfortunately, in order to pull out quality games like those, it takes time. In the meantime, most third party developers are cashing in on the accessibility and large casual audience and putting out crap. It kills Nintendo's image and turns “hardcore” gamers away.

So while Nintendo and a select few others slave away at making good games, third party companies essentially make the system the butt of jokes (the name alone has taken enough flak for this. Anyone remember when it was called the Revolution? Those were good times).

That's not to say that Nintendo is the only console with problems. I, for one, will never buy a PS3. Why? There isn't enough unique content. While you get some gems in there (I love Metal Gear Solid 4), there are way too many shooters. Shooters belong on the PC with a lovely mouse and keyboard, which, ironically, the Wii comes closest to mimicking with games like Metroid Prime 3 and the upcoming The Conduit.

In fact, the best console right now is the Xbox 360. The controller is the best, by far, of this console generation. There's a huge variety of great content. The online play is the most functional and fun. It just works.

Now, to the writer of this article. As everyone who defends the Wii is obligated to say at least once, graphics don't make the game. If better graphics support made a system better, then I dare you to tell me the Sega Genesis was better than the Super Nintendo. If a game is fun, a game is fun. And are you really going to knock the Virtual Console by comparing it to something that is illegal to all that don't already own the systems and games being emulated? Most people don't like to break the law, and if they want to play those old games and they don't already own them, they aren't going to find many of them as cheap as they will on the Wii. The Wii is also $250 in any store you go to. Check your prices.

Does the Wii suck? That's a matter of opinion. The writer of this article seems to think so because it doesn't have HD support and because one of its features can be replaced by illegal activities. That's like me shooting down the 360's Netflix feature because I can pirate movies from streaming video sites. Nobody ever thought the Wii was the best thing ever made. However, I can honestly tell you that I had more fun with Super Mario Galaxy than I did with anything on the 360 or PS3. Take that however you will.

P.S.: The best gaming platform will always and forever be a PC.

Keep in mind that "hardcore" gamers who only respect violent shooters and lack lives are only a small niche among gamers. Actually, it was even smaller when consoles like the Atari 2600 were around, because video games were a new thing. A "hardcore" gamer only stems from a casual gamer.

Also, your HD support argument is flawed. I would guess that maybe only 15% of the population uses HD? HD support may be a requirement next generation, but it hasn't penetrated society enough to be a requirement this generation.

And your point about 360 and PS3 are going to have motion controls... PS3 has god awful motion controls for games like Lair, and by the time Microsoft and Sony are caught up there, Nintendo will catch up as far as graphics are concerned. Now that Nintendo has about half of their consoles sold in the hands of previous non-gamers, they can use that niche and use bridge titles to slowly make these previous non-gamers hardcore gamers.

As far as the prices go, one thing that's amazing is that the software sells for $50 when it's new, and this saves a lot more money than exclusive PS3 or 360 gamers probably don't realize. The software is priced lower because Nintendo is smart about marketing, they are selling the Wii for a profit, while the other two are selling their consoles at a loss. Sony can't lower the PS3 price any more other than if the production costs are lowered (remove the Bluray maybe?) because of their deep, deep, deep deficit. And they have to lower their prices to make it look more attractive, or else the PS3 will be "Dreamcasted".

I own all three consoles, just so I can play the best all have to offer. Now I know not everybody can have all three, but they all have incredible titles. I love the wii. Wii is a turn in the wrong direction for Nintendo. For one I don't like the gimmicky controls, I guess I'm just a fan of conventional controls. Another thing is the inferior hardware. Looking at it, both it's CPU and GPU use the PowerPC/Gekko and ATI Flipper (Gamecube hardware) as it's basis. It really is a Gamecube 1.5. The third thing I dislike is that in a way they disowned their fans that kept them going during their so-called "dark ages". What's going to happen when a lot of fans give up and the market share is entirely in the hands of casuals? I don't think too many of them will be waiting outside on Launch day to buy a Gamecube 3.
My last thing with them is that several Gamecube games like Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 4, or Super Paper Mario (which was excluded from the Gamecube library completely), were ported over to Wii for some quick and easy sales. Credit was given to these ports instead of the real versions, especially with the first one.

Furthermore, to set the record straight, I am most certainly not a fanboy. I currently own a NES (2 official and 1 clone), SNES, and Gamecube and had a N64 that I regrettingly sold for a Dreamcast. Will I get the Wii? Probably. But aside from Brawl and Galaxy, I really don't care to get one.

The Wii is a Half-Gen abomination. It's just a parallel of the pre-fab PCs made for idiots who know nothing about computers, but want to check their e-mail. The Wii tends to pigeonhole itself into gimmicky, shallow party games and track shooters. I feel like Nintendo does cheat the hardcore gamer, and also manufacturing useless gimmicks like the Wii Zapper which is nothing but a piece of plastic that holds your Wiimote and Nunchuk....

How can they even say the wii is 7th Gen? it more like 5th gen in terms of power. Innovation is useless without good games that take advantage of that innovation.

Also you mentioned Portal. By far my most enjoyable game in awhile. It was a total shock to how good it was and the end of the game was the best ending ever!

I bought a wii because I too was sucked in. Thought games like super mario galaxy was amazing. Then I played portal on the 360. Holly jesus! I wanted to kick my self in the fucking head! How could I be so stupid. I'm a hardcore gamer and I got sucked in. The 360 is now the only console I play. The wii is the apple mac of the gaming world. It got smooth a white and attractive aesthetic appearance that sucks in fucking knuckle heads who have no idea that whats inside the box is actually utter crap. Man my ps2 is so much better. A fucking remote isn't innovation. I am so sick of wii fans always sticking up for the wii and writing what they believe to be witty comebacks like "go play with your heater (360)". I haven't ever had a heating problem with my 360. Only idiots who lock them in there television cabinets with no ventilation get that problem. It heats up for a reason!! cause its so fucking powerful pumping out HD graphics and doing insane algorithms in nano-seconds it burns the wii to dust and its shitty "two gamecubes stuck together with duct tape" hardware. Nintendo is a joke and I hope they fade away in to obscurity!!! The games suck. I just hired mario kart to see if it was going to at least bring some new life to the wii gathering dust but I'm fucking sick of it and the wifi service doesn't work cause there servers are to full. It is my opinion that the bashful gamers make fun of other systems so they feel better about their purchase. I'm sorry, but a lot of PS3 owners are on the blogs talking smack about the other systems. This is because they are upset about their systems. I am not a bashful gamer, but when someone makes frequent insulting comments i think your a douchebag. Therefore I will state my opinion with facts- just facts and with limited opinion. The 360 in better that ps3.
1better games, stfu about resistance halo blew it away. Ps3 people talk about metal gear solid when the franchis is fun but its not that great.

4 blu ray isn't that big of a deal- jusus christ dvds are just fine. yeah sure its cool but its not that great. Also the blu ray player in the ps3 causes there to be longer load times because it is slower.

i just bought the wii to play smash bros. brawl. that's it. you all may say the wii sucks that might be because you just don't like this one game; because this one game is reason enough for people to buy the wii and was for a majority of people on my campus. oh and as for the virtual console being a money hungry service- yeah if it was just that then people wouldn't be pushing their dollars into it, ROMS and emulators are still illegal, but besides that it's a bit difficult to get multi player action on most roms working anyway. furthermore, there are just some games i've never heard of that kick way more ass than games now. bomberman93 is 5 players? back in the day when four slots were not available you have all these games that have the capability (snes era) but now that its a reality there are no such games in existence. Wii sucks. I'm a game tester, I work with all three of the "next gen" systems. I own a 360 and PS3.

The graphics on the wii are garbage, the online play is garbage, the "waggle" is boring after an hour, the game selection is terrible, etc etc.

All of the previous statements I must conquer with, my brother bought a Wii just to be part of the craze, its completley horrid, the graphics are shoddy and rival that of a Ps one. I myself own a 360 with live and 8 or 9 games, no contest it blows the wii right out of the water, nintendo needs to pay attention to to their fanbase instead of screwing them over, but when you are a heartless corporation I guess those sort of things are uninportant as long as your putting the mopney in the bank. Nintendo for the sake of all gamers, dont make another console, much appreciated :)

I've been tempted to get a Wii since they came out, simply because it's the only way I could ever get my spouse to play games. The problem is, I can think of only 2-3 games I'd actually want to play, and I can't justify buying a console for just one or two short-lived gimmicky sports games.

Meanwhile, my PS2 has a massive selection of great games of all genres (and I'm collecting them all -MUWAHAHAHA!). I never jumped on the PS3/X360 bandwagon, but I have a ridiculously overpowered gaming/dev PC and the big console hits usually get ported within a reasonable time frame. Besides, I have no idea how people can even play FPSes on a gamepad. Halo on Xbox was ok, but it was so much better with a keyboard and mouse on the PC!

The Wii totally blows...the games suck, the system itself is completely undepowered and Nintendo is making about 2 games per year(minigame collections don't count). All two of its "Mega Games" RE4 and Zelda: TP are GAMECUBE PORTS!! To top it all off Nintendo is trying to sell you all the extremely crappy games through the Virtual Console before the ones you really want to buy, I know Nintendo really loves money more than any other console maker but c'mon, cut your fans a break! The Wii sucks and is nothing but a money-making machine for Nintendo and nothing more....no worthwhile games so far and nothing too great on the horizon...what a piece of crap..
