Installing Windows XP after Vista can be a real problem. As we all know Vista no longer uses oldschool boot.ini. So after installing XP on another partition, it takes over as the primary OS and you can't even select Vista. So how to fix this? Easy.
1) Get your Vista dvd and boot to it. Select the option to repair Windows Vista. This will restore the Vista Boot Manager.
2) After booting into Vista, install VistaBoot Pro 3.1+ and follow the steps on the webpage to add a Legacy Operating System (Windows XP). It's very easy and straightforward. :)
3) Now you must manually copy over the files on your C: Drive that Windows XP uses. Copy the boot.ini, ntldr, and NTDETECT.COM files over to your partition with XP installed. (If you can't see these files then you have to go to folder properties and show system/hidden files).
That's all there is to it! Perhaps in the future it will be much easier to do in Vista without the help of a third party application.
