The new Microsoft Office 2007 does more than simply change the default font, it changes double spaced styling as well. The default font is now Calibri (Body) size 11 and the default styling is known as "Office 2007". The new default styling actually makes double spaced closer together but bigger line breaks between paragraphs. You might be wondering, who cares? Well, obviously college students and high school students should care. Below you will see a sample of the end of the first page of my paper in both office 03 style and office 07 style.

The effects of these subtle changes are realized once you load up a paper you have previously written. Using the default Office 2007 settings previously mentioned, you will fit approximately two more lines of text per page. So I have to ask, what was wrong with the default settings to begin with? Why change this? I don't know about you but writing an extra two lines on twenty pages adds up quick. I certainly don't want to do more work. :)
So now EVERY single college student has to change the default style and default font before writing a paper. As people slowly upgrade to Office 2007, college professors will be seeing quite an array of fonts and styles. And for this first time, this would be completely unintentional. Does anyone have any clue why Microsoft did this?
For now I will give everyone directions on how to change it back to Office 2003 default settings. First, lets fix the default font. Instead of describing it and adding more pictures to this blog you can simply click the "question mark" in the top right hand and search for "default font". To fix the default style, click on the "Change Styles" button on the right-hand side then go to "Style Set ->Office 2003". When you click on the "change styles" button you will see the option to set this as the default.
Another website has brought this to light months ago but didn't add the comparative picture! See what a college education does folks! :)
