The error code of 0x80070017 means it can't read the dvd. The good news is that you can fix it with little trouble. First of all, the only reason you have this error is if you downloaded the iso, legally or otherwise. I have been searching for the answer to this question for about 20 minutes with many different answers. After weeding out the bullshit solutions, there is one that will work. . .
You have to reburn the iso at a slower speed. You will get much better results if you burn the dvd with the same drive that you will install it on. Perhaps Microsoft did this on purpose? If that doesn't work, try a different burn application. If that STILL doesn't work, get better media or actually buy the OS. :)
This error code and fix applies to Windows 7 installs as well.
I'm installing windows 7 right now and had the same error! First dvd gave that error but the second dvd didn't (the first one was 8x speed, second one 4x speed) However! On my other notebook it worked with the first disk (just tried). So I think it's not just one problem. It depends on your type of dvd-reader/burner and the speedrate.

Also had this error on Windows 7 RC1. Didn't believe it would work to burn the ISO at a slower speed, but it worked. Cheers!

Just to add, i had been getting this error. I thought the 'disc burnt dodgy' explanation seemed a bit fishy as i had 2 copies, one dell recovery disc and a copy. Both did the same thing. I had been getting errors before trying the reinstall. Long story short. I used the manufacturers hd diag prog and found it was a damaged hard drive causing the error. Just thought id share.

Hi i have a problem with this update, i stole my copy of vista from a shop on the high street and for some reason it wont update and as i dont work and never will cause i just can't be arsed i called microsoft to complain about stolen copys should work and if they don't sort mine i will steal unix next time. tossers
I have Vista Home Premium as my OS right now and it runs fine but I am trying to install Windows 7 and I am getting this error about half way through the installation. For some reason I think it has to do with the Service Packs but even when I run boot from my CDROM it still gives me this error... Any Ideas?

I had an old computer in my closet that I decided to fix and sell. I bought a new hard drive for it and got a discounted iso of Vista Business from my school. When I got the 0x080070017 error while "extracting files" I was sure my computer was garbage. I saw a bunch of people claiming they fixed it by changing the dvd drive or burning a new disk and I didn't believe it. After switching the DVD drive out with the one in my new computer, it still didn't work. So, I burned a new disk at the lowest speed possible on Roxio (2.0x). It actually worked and installed fine.

um, i'm getting this error while using the disc that came with my laptop.
maybe it's a protection thing? i think it sux bulls if i can't use it, and instead have to use the recovery image on the drive that comes loaded with hp's crap.

Thats pretty much bullshit because I used the EXACT same DVD to put the OS on one computer successfully and got this error when installing on another computer from the EXACT same DVD. It is a hardware issue, I think its the graphics card.

What I successfully did to prevent the error is to hook up another DVD player from an other PC. This was a newer one and apparently more compatible with the tracks on the DVD. I burnt it already on the lowest possible speed.
And about Vista? I find it frustrating that things keep crashing and are so sesitive. I also hate all the security warnings even though I understand why they are built in. Better design a solid OS instead of all this "patchwork" to prevent abuse. I must admit that I find the flashy and smooth things attractive.
