Let's say for a minute that the United States Presidntial campaign argued about Tech related issues instead of the regular political stuff. Now wouldn't that be engaging TV for about 12 geeks, but guess what? I am one of those 12 geeks! So lets take a look at the top 10 things that the next president has to fix related to technology.
1) SPAM! When the total number of spam email outweigh real email by a ratio of 5 to 1 then there clearly is a problem. The way email is authenticated needs to be changed to avoid spammers from mass emailing at will. I don't know how but it needs to happen. Let the candidates think this one through.
2) DDOS Attacks. Let's say somehow a script kiddie gets pissed off and decides to Denial of Service attack a website you own. Chances are that your website is going offline. Somehow, someway, packets need to be authenticated in a way that makes denial of service (and similar) attacks a thing of the past.
3) Cell phone bills. I can get broadband right now starting at 768 Kbps / 128 Kbps or better for $20 a month for my PC. I am sure some of us can get it for even cheaper than that. So why are cell phone data plans so expensive? How do they get away with saying unlimited* when it really isn't? Why are cell phone applications closed source and cost so much damn money?! How is a 30 second ringtone almost 3 dollars in some cases? Enough with the confusing plans and added fees!
4) Web Standards. Making compliant web browsers should not be optional. Everything that is part of the proposed web standards should work in ALL browsers. Web developers should not have to make tweaks to get web pages to render correctly because IE6 and IE7 behave differently. Make Microsoft develop a 100% compliant browser starting with IE8. And force updates to everyone who has old browsers.
5) ipv6. We are rapidly running out of IPv4 addresses and its better if we make the change sooner rather than later. So can we get a move on with this please?
6) Myspace. This entire website should be deleted from the internet. Someone get the secret service in there and accidently wipe the hard drives that host this website. Either that or a global ban from going to the myspace domain. We need to force people to email and commuicate the old fashion way. That's right people! There was a time where people didn't send glittery "Happy Birthday" images to each other.
7 Secure Socket Layer. Why are only certain websites and transmissions encrypted? Why can't everything be encrypted? Why can't we live in a country where nothing is plaintext!? That's right, I said it!
8. Instant Messenging Interoperability. Every single instant messenging client should be able to communicate with screen names from other networks. Yahoo, MSN, and AIM users should all be able to talk to each other no matter what client is installed. I realize there are alternate solutions out there, but this should be forced upon the major players! Get it done.
9) Adware / Spyware . I am sick and tired of having to fix other people's computers because they have 10 toolbars installed that I've never even heard of. Seek out the companys that make these things and put them in jail for malicious and unfair business practices.
10) Windows Vista. Ahh, but its here for a reason that may surprise you. Not only do I need a 10th item to make this post reach supreme elite status, but people need to stop bad mouthing the thing. Sure the OS has it's share of problems but it is certainly not the George W. Bush that people make it out to be.
Feel free to chime in what you think I missed that is annoying the crap out of you and needs to be addressed.
