We have all come across those annoying full page Ad-Brite ads that take over the screen and force you to click "Skip Ad". These are sometimes called "Transition Ads" by other ad publishers. To everyone else they are called annoying. I don't mind regular ads but these are ruining my web browsing experience so here is a quick tip on how to block them. This tip has been made possible by http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
In order to block these ads, we are going to edit your windows HOSTS file. To achieve this go to the appropriate directory and open the hosts file in notepad.
| Windows Vista | = | C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC |
| Windows XP | = | C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC |
| Windows 2K | = | C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC |
| Win 98/ME | = | C:\WINDOWS |
Now add the following lines in addition to what is already there:
# [AdBrite, Inc]
127.0.0.1 adbrite.com #[Ewido.TrackingCookie.Adbrite]
127.0.0.1 1.adbrite.com
127.0.0.1 2.adbrite.com #[SiteAdvisor.findwhatevernow.com]
127.0.0.1 3.adbrite.com
127.0.0.1 4.adbrite.com
127.0.0.1 ads.adbrite.com
127.0.0.1 click.adbrite.com
127.0.0.1 files.adbrite.com
127.0.0.1 pic.adbrite.com
127.0.0.1 vid.adbrite.com
127.0.0.1 site.www.adbrite.com
127.0.0.1 stats.adbrite.com
127.0.0.1 www.adbrite.com
127.0.0.1 www.avnads.com
127.0.0.1 www.britepic.com
127.0.0.1 1.httpads.com #[1adbrite.adbrite.com.akadns.net]
127.0.0.1 1.marketbanker.com
127.0.0.1 2.marketbanker.com
127.0.0.1 www.marketbanker.com
Then click save and then head over to www.adbrite.com and notice that the page no longer loads. This is a good thing, because now all requests to adbrite's server are redirected towards your own computer. You will never see another adbrite ad ever again.
If you'd rather block most of the ads online and block a lot of potentially harmful sites then head over to http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm and copy and paste their entire hosts file.
